A new study from GS1 US shows that supply chain professionals feel confident in their ability to handle disruptions. However, many still report struggling to see what is actually happening across their supply chains.
According to the report, Powering Supply Chain Confidence: The Role of Data and Standardization, 64% of respondents said they were highly confident in their supply chain, and another 35% said they were moderately confident. But nearly half (43%) said they have a hard time maintaining visibility, making it difficult to react quickly when problems arise.
The study was based on a national survey of more than 500 supply chain leaders across various industries, including grocery, healthcare, apparel, and general merchandise.
So what’s helping the confident companies stay ahead?
According to the report, they are more likely to use centralized systems that help manage disruptions in real-time. They also tend to rely on automation, trust the accuracy of their data, and use GS1 Standards. Among those using GS1 Standards, 77% said they felt very confident in their ability to respond to disruptions.
The research also found that companies using real-time tracking tech were 68% more likely to say they had better visibility and inventory control.
Sustainability also came up as a top concern. Nearly every company surveyed—99%—said sustainability is important to them. But only about half have taken steps to put it into practice. The most common efforts include recycling programs, sustainable packaging, certifications, and sourcing eco-friendly materials.
Bob Carpenter, President and CEO of GS1 US, said the pressure on companies is intense right now.
“Geopolitical tension, fluctuating demand, and supply chain disruptions are putting immense pressure on organizations, forcing them to rethink and transform their supply chain strategies,” Carpenter said. “To remain competitive, organizations must adopt greater agility, innovation, and sustainability throughout the entire supply chain. Success now depends on real-time adaptability, enhanced visibility, and operational innovation, all while maintaining a strong focus on sustainable business practices.”
