In a new report from PMMI, consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies and their industry partners made one thing clear: productivity is their number one priority for 2025. According to survey data from PMMIās Embracing Operational Readiness report, 78% of respondents said improving productivity is their top focus, well ahead of other concerns like cost (47%) and automation (47%).
The findings are based on conversations from PMMIās annual Top to Top Summit, where leaders from across the packaging, processing, and supply chain worlds came together to talk about shared challenges. This yearās event focused on three big operational themes: faster vertical startups, smarter operator training, and better IT-OT integration.
Attendees said that vertical startups succeed when OEMs and CPGs work closely from day one. Training programs that account for real-world issuesālike language barriers, turnover, and shift changesāalso ranked high, especially those using digital tools, interactive manuals, or augmented reality. On the tech side, integrating IT and operations systems remains complex, especially when it comes to cybersecurity and justifying the investment.
āUsed strategically and safely, [technology] can provide the means to create more efficient production,ā said Jorge Izquierdo, Vice President of Market Development at PMMI. āCompanies that refine and streamline processes, develop skilled workers, and unlock the power of their IT-OT systems create an environment of operational readiness.ā
